Canadian Stories ContestDefining Moments: Discovering our Canadian Stories is a national digital media arts and citizenship project aimed at engaging youth across Canada to explore, express and showcase their diverse perspectives on Canadian identity. The aim of the program is to foster cross-cultural participation among youth through regionally coordinated workshops along with a national art contest and traveling exhibition. The project aims to increase young Canadians’ understanding of, and attachment to Canada through a creative and collaborative process.

The project includes:

Interactive Workshops

Youth facilitators selected from every Canadian province and territory will deliver a series of workshops in local schools, community centres and libraries on the topics of identity, civic engagement and artistic expression. Workshops will take place from September 2011 to January 2012.

Art Contest and Collection

Through a medium of their choice including, drawing, painting, collage, video, photography, song, and the written word, youth will have the opportunity to share their reflections and experiences related to their defining moments as Canadians. The contest deadline is March 1st 2012.

Travelling Art Exhibit

A collection that includes the top entries from across the country will be selected by a jury to be featured as part of a curated national art exhibit. This art exhibit will be showcased in various locations across Canada, including the nation’s capital, in February 2013. Regional events will also be organized featuring local and national content.

Workshops

If you have a venue that can accommodate a workshop for approximately 30 participants led by one of our trained facilitators and you are interested in being a host organization, please let us know!

Promotion

Does your organization work with young people? We would love to invite youth in your network who are between the ages of 13-30 to take part in local workshops and apply to the national art contest. Young leaders can also apply to become a workshop facilitator and receive training and support.

Exhibition Space

We are eager to secure venues across Canada which are able to feature artwork as part of the national exhibit. Spaces can include, but are not limited to galleries, cafes, stores, libraries or building lobbies. In addition to curated national content, exhibit partners can choose to show up to 50% local content to be printed or displayed.

Contribution

Monetary contributions are always welcome! We are especially looking for great prizes that we can offer to the winners of the art contest including gift certificates, travel support and cool gadgets.

Each of our partners will be recognized on our website and will be featured in select promotional materials.
